What made you use Jaiku rather than Twitter or something else? For me, it was the IM. Will more people switch to Jaiku once it goes public?

I am bouncing around between twitter, pownce, and here...I have still not picked one yet...there is a bit of overload going on here and I do not know where it will shake out. I'm also looking to poke around grandcentral and natuba...I don't know which will get me to drop all the rest.

Peer pressure. ;) Everyone else where switching. And I really like the lifestream capabilities.

I doubt that the commitment to any one service will be more than fleeting when it comes to web based microblogging/chat. The downside is of course that at each move not everyone will move with you. It'll be interesting to see how it can be managed when there are ten services and your contacts are spread amongst them.

Peer pressure, in this regard, is actually not too bad :)

@RickMeasham: Interesting! I find (4) to be on par with twitter, and (3) to be to twitter's advantage. I've been on twitter's dev google list a long time and they've always been very responsive to suggestions and rolling out new things and bug fixes quite quickly.

Comments & Lifestream, obviously. But I don't see Twitter dying anytime soon, and Pownce keeps growing, so it's impossible to choose right now!

@rubin: No, twitter's definitely not dying anytime soon, they've got a lot of enthusiastic users! I still like it, I just don't use it very much :)

Same here, but I'd dump it in a New York minute, but for the 25% of my contacts who don't have a Jaiku account...

@lemonad: True .. al3x on twitter is very responsive .. I started deving on twitter, but when I found the icons and comments over here I moved. Very warily at first as you'd see in my twitter comments. I think any 'better' responsiveness would only be due to the limited nature of their service. Comments, channels, icons are all gone, so there's a lot less to concentrate on.

The "comments" capability allows for more structured, deeper conversations on Jaiku. With its simplistic "@replies" feature, Twitter will eventually become more of a marketing tool than an actual microblogging app. Pownce is somewhat stuck between a rock and a hard place on this matter.

@rubin: I haven't tried pownce yet (my invitations never reached me and now I can't be invited again :) so I can't compare it with twitter or Jaiku. The downside is only that I don't know how to define comments here. I mean, who's lifestream do they belong to? Do they compare to comments or trackbacks? On twitter, they're comparable to trackbacks, i.e., they exist on my microblog, in my lifestream, and the @usernames is just a link back to you.

everyone: What about channels? That's a pretty cool feature actually, I didn't think about that myself until now. There's a lot of 3rd party dev work that has been put into twitter to enable the same functionality for different purposes (e.g., twittergrams).

I'd take comments on Jaiku at face value. In my opinion, they primarily belong to their author. But I guess you could argue they belong to both.

Channels are very cool. They add the little IRC-ish taste that differentiates Jaiku from Pownce and Twitter altogether.
